Rudy Crew

I have been and I continue to be a person who really wants desperately to see that the efforts you put forward in the institutions you’ve been in and the work you’ve done actually have made people’s lives better and in particular children and even more particular the students whose lives in some ways mimic my own.

Dr. Rudolph Franklin "Rudy" Crew is the President of Medgar Evers College, where he continues his lifelong dedication to educational leadership. A first-generation college graduate, Dr. Crew attended Babson College, where he was one of the African-American students who helped integrate the institution. He later earned both a Master of Education and a Doctor of Education from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Crew has held several key leadership roles in public education and government. Notably, he served as Oregon’s first Chief Education Officer, overseeing the state's public education system from pre-kindergarten to college and career readiness.

Dr. Crew is perhaps best known for his tenure as Chancellor of the New York City Department of Education from 1995 to 1999, where he led the nation’s largest school district. He also served as Superintendent of Sacramento City Schools and Miami-Dade County Public Schools, the latter being the fourth-largest district in the nation. In Miami-Dade, he implemented successful reforms that led to national recognition, including being named National Superintendent of the Year in 2008.

Dr. Crew’s work in educational reform has left a lasting impact, and he continues to shape the future of education through his leadership at Medgar Evers College.
